当含有hardness离子的original water通过exchange resin layer时，它们与resin内的sodium ions发生ion exchange。这样从exchange device流出的softened water就是去掉了hardness ions后的结果。当interchange process不断进行并且所有Na+被置换出来后，就失去了交换功能，此时必须使用Nacl溶液对resin进行regeneration，将caused by Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ placed back onto the resinsurface, and then the resin re-absorbed sodium ions, restoring its softening exchange ability.
