As I stepped off the plane in Costa Rica, a wave of warm tropical air enveloped me, carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the earthy smell of damp soil. I had always been fascinated by this small Central American country, known for its lush rainforests, exotic wildlife, and pristine beaches. And now, as a budding environmentalist and travel enthusiast, I was here to explore it all – on foot.

My journey began in the bustling capital city of San José. From there, I made my way to Arenal Volcano National Park – one of Costa Rica's most iconic natural wonders. As I hiked through the park's dense cloud forest trails, I marveled at towering trees that seemed to touch the sky and colorful birds flitting between them.

Next up was Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve – an enchanting world suspended high above sea level. The mist-shrouded canopy walkway offered breathtaking views of sprawling treetops and tiny epiphytes clinging precariously to branches far above me.

But perhaps my favorite part of this trip was exploring Tortuguero National Park by boat along canals teeming with life. In these protected waters lived crocodiles basking in sun-drenched shallows; playful monkeys lounging on riverbanks; even majestic manatees gliding silently beneath our canoe.

Each stop on my itinerary brought new discoveries about Costa Rica's incredible biodiversity – but also raised questions about how best we might preserve it for generations yet unborn. It struck me then (and remains true today) that eco-tourism is more than just a trend or fad: it is essential if we are to protect our planet from exploitation while still enjoying its beauty firsthand.

So what does "ecotourism" mean? Simply put: traveling responsibly so as not to harm local ecosystems or communities while taking pleasure in nature's splendor. For instance, choosing accommodations run by environmentally-conscious owners who plant native species back into their grounds after harvesting timber from non-endangered sources can make all the difference when supporting conservation efforts worldwide.
