Water's hardness is mainly composed of calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions.
When water containing hardness ions flows through the ion exchanger, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water exchange with sodium ions on the resin, removing hardness from the water.
As the exchange process continues, all Na⁺ are replaced by Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ in the resin, losing its exchange function; at this point, a sodium chloride solution must be used to regenerate the resin to remove Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ from it,
and restore its ability to soften water.
